The Meaning Behind Hamilton Young
The name, Hamilton Young, serves as a tribute to the courage and legacy of two resilient, local and historic individuals and relatives of Steve Bacon:
Thomas Hamilton, Steve’s 5th Great Grandfather born 1725 in Ulster, Ireland. Thomas fought in the Revolutionary War under Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. He moved to Sumner County after the War and received 4,800 acres for his military service in Sumner County near the Wilson County line, Hamilton Station.
Robert Young, born 1718 in Virginia and Steve’s 7th Great Grandfather, fought with the Overmountain Men that marched over the mountains when the British threatened to burn all the farms who didn’t support the British. The battle, Kings Mountain, was a turning point in the War and the Overmountain Men defeated the British and Robert Young shot and killed the British General with his rifle which he named Sweet Lips, which is now in the Tennessee Museum.
